Strawberry Pineapple Buttermilk Smoothie

The first time I blended buttermilk into a fruit smoothie, I could not believe I had never tried it before. One cup of fresh strawberries, one cup of fresh pineapple, one cup of buttermilk, one tablespoon of honey, and half a cup of ice cubes. Blended until smooth and creamy. The buttermilk is tangy and cold and it makes the whole drink taste like a melted frozen treat.

Most smoothies use plain milk and taste flat. With buttermilk, you taste the tartness first, then the sweet strawberry and pineapple come through stronger than they would on their own. The honey balances everything. This is a smoothie that tastes rich without being heavy. One of my favorite things we make on a hot morning.

Tips for Making Strawberry Pineapple Buttermilk Smoothie

Use fresh fruit, not frozen

Fresh strawberries and pineapple blend smoother with buttermilk than frozen. The ice cubes do the chilling.

Hull the strawberries and chop the pineapple into small pieces before adding to the blender. Smaller pieces blend faster.

Blend until completely smooth

Pineapple has fibrous strands that can survive a quick blend. Run the blender for at least thirty seconds, longer if you see chunks.

Serve immediately. The buttermilk separates if the smoothie sits. A quick stir brings it back together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does buttermilk taste like in a smoothie?

Tangy and creamy, thinner than most cultured dairy. It adds a sour note that balances the sweetness of the fruit and honey.

Can I use regular milk instead?

You can, but you lose the tang. Regular milk makes a sweeter, blander smoothie. If you want some tang without buttermilk, add a squeeze of lemon juice to regular milk.

Can I add protein powder?

Yes. A scoop of vanilla protein powder blends in well. Add it with the buttermilk and increase the ice slightly to keep the texture thick.
