Quick bites from around the food safety arena
- Two people have died and almost 500 have been infected across three Salmonella outbreaks in the United Kingdom since 2025. In one of the three clusters under investigation, there have been 259 confirmed cases and one death. Genetic markers indicate outbreaks could be related to consumption of imported eggs.
- In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Newport with 84 patients identified so far. The FDA is not reporting any information about the patients, the location of the outbreak or the traceback efforts under way.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 11,485 patients in the current iceberg lettuce-linked Cyclospora outbreak as of Aug. 27. Patients have been confirmed in three more states: Georgia, Tennessee and Texas. The number of deaths related to the outbreak still stands at two. The CDC continues to investigate additional Cyclospora outbreaks across the country.
- A Welsh university has received a grant to explore how artificial intelligence could improve food safety in workplaces and at home. The Smart Hygiene Intelligence Project at Cardiff Metropolitan University will use behavioral science and AI to develop ways of improving food hygiene habits and food safety compliance.
